"Internship, teaching, and studying abroad are perfect citizen diplomacy."
Cultural Exchange
At the award-winning 501(c)(3) nonprofit Institute for Education, Research, and Scholarships (IFERS), we believe that internship, teaching, and studying abroad are perfect citizen diplomacy.
Former U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama spoke at Peking University on March 22, 2014:
"I'm here today because I know that our future depends on connections like these among young people like you across the globe. We believe that relationships between nations aren't just about relationships between governments or leaders — they're about relationships between people, particularly young people."
Cultural Exchange
The Fulbright–Hays Act of 1961 was signed into law by President John F. Kennedy to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries by means of educational and cultural exchange.
Today, the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program under the Fulbright–Hays Act provides opportunities for more than 300,000 foreign visitors from over 200 countries to experience U.S. society and culture and engage with Americans every year.
J-1 cultural exchange programs include J-1 internship, J-1 traineeship, J-1 teaching, and J-1 work & travel.
